Sint Maarten, the southern Dutch side of Saint Martin island and formerly a part of the Netherlands Antilles is now a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the capital in Philipsburg.
Starting September 30, 2011 Sint Maarten joined the North American Numbering Plan. The country was assigned area code 721 within the NANP. This means that, in order to call Sint Maarten from the USA, Canada and other countries using this numbering system, one has to just dial 1 721 followed by the 7 digit local number. To call it from other countries, country code 1 will be used: +1 721 ??? ????.
Both the former country code 599 and the new code 1 721 will be operational for one year from September 30, 2011 to September 30, 2012 when dialing +1 721 to reach Sint Maarten becomes mandatory.
The international exit code required to dial international calls from Sint Maarten will also change from 00 currently to 011 on May 1, 2012.
