    Hello,

With an unlocked iPhone your daughter can use any SIM card, including a European SIM. In addition, there are so many apps she could use. For example, she could place calls or send texts using Rebtel or Skype ( https://www.rebtel.com and https://www.skype.com ). Both charge reasonable rates – of course, she would have to have access to a WIFI connection to use these apps without paying extra.

Using a European SIM either with the unlocked iPhone or with a cheap phone bought over there to place calls within Europe may be a good idea because roaming charges in Europe are not too high. Still, placing calls/sending texts via the apps mentioned above would be cheaper. In other words, use the apps via WIFI when possible and for other more urgent needs use the local SIM.

    Hello,
Just dial the number in its international dialing format: +27 followed by the South African mobile number (9 digits).

    Hello,
Please try the page on calling to Serbia (Kosovo doesn’t have a country code yet). For mobile phones I believe you should use Slovenia’s country code (386). If you can post the phone number you want to call I’ll try to determine whether it is a cell or a fixed line.

    Hello Ronald,
This is a mobile phone from Cote D’Ivoire (aka Ivory Coast). To call it from the US dial 011 instead of 00 in the beginning. For more info check out the page below:

It’s likely that Rebtel would solve this problem for you because you would use their connections to place the call. Try it and let me know how it’s worked out. In fact I believe they give you a free trial call so you wouldn’t have to buy anything beforehand.

    Hello,
If this is a French cell number you ought to call France regardless of the phone’s whereabouts. If you are in the US or Canada this is what you should dial:
011 33 followed by the French cell number. France uses 9 digit mobile numbers starting with either 6 or 7. More info below:

    Hello,
This is an unusual situation. Have you tried using a different line to place this call? Also, make sure you call at a not so busy time of day (check out Ukraine’s time on https://www.timeanddate.com ).

If you want I could dial the number for you just to see if I hear the same recording.

    Gerry,
You are correct, if you were living in France you would have to use 0 before all phone numbers. In fact you would consider 0 as part of the phone number.

A trunk code is normally used for long distance calls. The US and Canada also use a trunk code – it is 1. When dialing state to state calls you must use 1 + area code + local number. In this case 1 is the US trunk or long distance code. There is a bit of confusion here since the US country code is also 1. So when dialing to the US from abroad you drop the trunk code (1) and dial the country code which is also 1.

One other thing: France has a so called closed dialing plan which means that there are no area codes or local numbers – all calls are dialed nationally using the national dialing format starting with 0.

    Hello Alexandra,
What you need to do is check out our codes list and look for a country’s exit code:
    https://www.howtocallabroad.com/codes.html

I can tell you for sure that all of Europe uses 00 to dial internationally. I can’t say for sure that all countries in Asia except for Japan use 00. I know most countries do use 00.

One easier solution, if you will be using a mobile phone to place calls is to use the plus sign instead of 00 or 010 or whatever exit code a country uses: +1 ??? ??? ???? will work from all countries.

    Hello,
The sequence you have been dialing is correct. Maybe the numbers aren’t active phone numbers. I just tried dialing the first one and it doesn’t seem to work from my end either.

The zero trunk code is used for national calls. When in France you could also call locally by entering French phone numbers in their national dialing format. Example: French cell number: 06 ???? ????. You can either use 00 33 6 ???? ???? or 06 ???? ???? to reach the same French cell when dialing from within France using a mobile phone. Normally you should dial the latter, but wireless carriers set up their networks to recognize both dialing formats.

    Hello,
If the collect call number is a US number the same rules for dialing to the US apply. From Europe you add 00 before 1: 00 1 ??? ??? ????.
Normally, a collect call should be a free call. I have noticed that banks provide collect call numbers for calls from outside the US, but these numbers look like regular landlines, so to be honest I do not know how calling them would be free of charge. I will research this further. I suppose you aren’t concerned with whether the call is free or not, but with whether you will be able to contact the bank, and you shouldn’t experience any issues with the latter provided you’ll have access to a working phone.

    Hello,
The area code for Matanzas is 45. Cuba’s country code is 53 so from Canada you would have 011 53 45 662 ***

    Hello Cherry,
To call back to the US add 00 to the complete US phone number: 00 1 ??? ??? ????. You can also use + instead of 00 (literally keying in the plus sign), but never both.

Calls within those countries can either be dialed in their local or international dialing format. Say you want to dial this Austrian cell number: 6?? ??? ????. You either add zero to it (the way you add 1 to US state to state calls): 06?? ??? ???? or you dial the full international number (no zero this time): 00 43 6?? ??? ???? or again +43 6?? ??? ????.

I don’t think you’ve read my previous message. You aren’t dialing correctly. If you are calling to a US cell located in Germany you DO NOT have to add Germany’s country code or any international codes. Just dial the US number the exact same way you dial it when this friend of yours is at home in the US.

Hello again – sorry, I first misread your post (the above is correct for two US cell phones both located in Germany and trying to contact each other, also, I was under the impression that 241 was the US area code of the cell you’ve been trying to call).

So you are actually trying to call your friend’s US cell phone and you are in the US and they are in Germany. OK, if so you do not need to change anything in the way you dial your friend’s number – just pretend they are still in the US and dial the number like you usually do. The above link on international roaming is still helpful.

    Hi Gerry,
You seem to perfectly understand how international roaming works and your conclusion is correct: phone is local for outgoing and US for incoming.
    Enjoy your stay in France!

    Hello,
Calling a US cell phone located in Germany does not mean you add Germany’s country code to it. You ought to call it as if you were dialing back to the US (which is how the connection is made). This is what you should dial: 00 1 241 and so on.

Here’s more on how international roaming works
